Ten Cherished Days of Memories Embracing the Fullness of Life

Remembering the loves of our lives is an ongoing journey that goes beyond anniversaries or special dates. The profound love I shared with my wife has defined who I am, and it’s hard to imagine a day passing without thinking of her. In the early days after her passing, I found myself engulfed in darkness, uncertain about how to live or even if I wanted to live at all. The incredible strength of our love has been like a guiding light, illuminating even my darkest moments.

This love has inspired me not only to embrace her passions but also to embark on my journey after loss. I share my story and actively support cancer research. I’ve dedicated myself to volunteering, taking long walks, immersing myself in books, and truly savoring every moment life has to offer. This love fuels my passion for living life to the fullest and serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, as well as the incredible power of love to inspire hope in the face of adversity.

I’ve come to realize that these small moments of remembering are not just fleeting thoughts; they are the anchors that keep us connected to our loved ones and provide comfort in our grief. Each day also brings opportunities for reflection and appreciation, a powerful tool that has been instrumental in my healing process. It reminds me of the beauty of our time together and the importance of embracing life to the fullest. The life I lead today, filled with love and purpose, would not have been possible without a marriage built on love and support.

Many of my friends have remarked that I seem transformed, almost like a better or entirely new person. While I can’t confirm or dispute their perceptions, I do know one thing: every day, I consciously choose to embrace life with open arms. I strive to savor each moment, filling my days and nights with as much joy and meaning as I can for however much time I have left.

In this post, I will share three essays that I previously published on my stream, covering events that took place over ten days from April 26 to May 5. This timeframe begins with the Big Climb, just two days after what would have been her seventy-fifth birthday, and it concludes on the fourth anniversary of her funeral.

Initially, you might think that these stories revolve around sad memories, but they reflect who I am today and offer insight into my future journey. I always appreciate your feedback, as it plays a crucial role in my growth and helps me strive to live my best life. Your thoughts and insights are invaluable to me, and I truly value your presence in my journey. It is your support that has made my transformation possible, and I am grateful to every one of you. Today, I delved into the unique narrative of ‘Clean: A Novel‘ by Alia Trabucco Zerán, translated by Sophie Hughes. This compelling novel, shortlisted for the Femina Etranger and Medicis Etranger Prizes, unfolds the story of a maid who has witnessed a lot and a family on the brink of collapse. The narrative is centered around a young girl’s death, with the family’s maid being the critical witness under interrogation, tasked with recounting the events leading up to the tragedy.

Estela’s journey from the countryside, leaving her mother behind, to work for the señor and señora when their only child was born is poignant. Their ad for a housemaid: ‘Smart appearance, full-time,’ was her ticket to earning enough to support her mother and return home. Estela cleaned their laundry, wiped their floors, and made their meals for seven years, but she also became privy to their secrets, witnessed their conflicts, and raised their daughter. She heard the rats in the ceiling, saw the looks the señor gave the señora, and knew about the poison in the cabinet, the gun, the daughter’s rebellion, the mother’s coldness, and the father’s distance. She experienced it all.

After a series of shocking betrayals and revelations, Estela’s silence becomes her shield, broken only now to reveal how it all unraveled. Is this a tale of vengeance or a confession? The narrator of Ben Lerner‘s new novel has traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to conduct what will be the final published interview with Thomas, his ninety-year-old mentor and the father of his college friend Max. Thomas is a giant in the arts who seems to hail from the future and the past simultaneously and who reenchants the air when he speaks. But the narrator drops his smartphone in the hotel sink. He arrives at Thomas’s house without a recording device, a fact he is mysteriously unable to admit.

What unfolds from this dreamlike circumstance is the unforgettable story of the triangle formed by Thomas, Max, and the narrator, as well as an exploration of fathers and sons, male friendship and rivalry, and the challenges of parenting in a burning world. Ben Lerner is the author of several poetry and prose books, as well as collaborative works with visual artists. He has received fellowships from the Fulbright, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Foundations. Lerner has been a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, along with many other honors. He is a Distinguished Professor of English at Brooklyn College.

A Feather on the Water

by Lindsay Jayne Ashford

A Feather on the Water by Lindsay Jayne Ashford is an excellent historical fiction of the post-was era for displaced people. I highly recommend it. The tagline reads, “for three women in postwar Germany, 1945 is a time of hope—lost and found.” I have always enjoyed historical fiction, and A Feather on the Water seemed like a perfect choice.

The opening paragraphs confirmed my decision, as Martha, one of the three women, escapes from her abusive husband in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Martha and the two other characters, Delphine and Kitty, come to life with Ms. Ashford’s gifted pen.

Like a feather in the water, our lives continue despite the trials and tribulations we must confront.

The Goodreads summary provides an overview.

Just weeks after World War II ends, three women from different corners of the world arrive in Germany to run a displaced-persons camp. They long to help rebuild shattered lives—including their own.

For Martha, going to Germany provides an opportunity to escape Brooklyn and a violent marriage. Arriving from England is orphaned Kitty. She hopes working at the camp will bring her closer to her parents, last seen before the war began. For Delphine, Paris has been a city of ghosts after her husband and son died in Dachau. I recently started reading “Come and Get It” by Kiley Reid, a celebrated New York Times bestselling author known for her book Such a Fun Age. The novel is about a senior resident assistant named Millie Cousins, who, in 2017, attended the University of Arkansas. Millie aspires to graduate, get a job, and buy a house.

She is offered an unusual opportunity by Agatha Paul, a visiting professor and writer, which she accepts. Unfortunately, Strange new friends, dorm pranks, and illicit behavior undermine Millie’s ambition.

Overall, “Come and Get It” is a gripping story about desire, consumption, and recklessness. It explores themes of money, indiscretion, and bad behavior through Millie’s eyes. The novel is highly anticipated, given that Kiley Reid is an acclaimed and award-winning author.
