The Peace Lilly of Love!

“You are overwatering the plants,” Jan declared.

Her comment baffled me, as I had only watered them once while she was in the hospital for the last two weeks.

I apologized and promised to do better.

“Why are you apologizing?”

Because I did not take care of the plants.

Turning on the faucet, I filled up the watering can.

“Do not worry about the plants; I need your help to get upstairs.”

I have always liked flowering plants and wanted to believe that Jan was not the only one with a green thumb.

Thanks to my friend Deb, I took a giant step toward making Apartment 3B my home last September!

With Deb’s guidance and commitment to care for the plants, an Orchid Jan received twenty-two months ago while in the hospital bloomed for the first time in February.

I was surprised that my Peace Lilly bloomed last week.

Jan and the Peace Lilly are the last things I see at night and the first things I see in the morning. It is on a bookcase by my bed next to a photo of the love of my life.

I have accepted I will never be a master gardener, but Jan is still with me now, and her love will ensure that the plants thrive and bloom forever.

The Orchid Whisperer

When Dr. Saksena shared that Jan was cancer-free; I was overcome with gratitude and joy. Though a thoughtful visitor had given Jan a live plant, it was against the rules to have it on the cancer floor. Jan reminded me to take the Orchid home with me.

The Orchid bloomed again after 22 months, thanks to Rabbi Renee's guidance on proper care.

Whenever I see the Orchid, I am reminded of Jan's love for it. Even though I may not have Jan's green thumb, and the Orchid may not bloom again, I will always cherish Jan's passion. True love never fades away.

New Growth and New Blooms

No Green Thumb But Flowers Bloom With Jan's Love!

I felt happy after my morning walk when I saw my Peace Lily flourishing. Two new stems were about to bloom, which added to the beauty of the ones that had already blossomed. Although I’m not an expert in plant care, I’m proud to have nurtured them with love and attention. It brings me great pleasure to see them thriving.

My grandmother, a wise woman, once shared that love is the key to a fulfilling life. I strongly believe in this statement, and it led me to meet and marry Jan, who became a source of inspiration and motivation for me. Her love and care went beyond our relationship and extended to my plants. Even though she’s not with me anymore, her love still nourishes and sustains me and my plants.

Remember, love is the secret ingredient that can make all the difference in our lives and the lives of those around us.

Today, I dove into Sally Rooney‘s latest novel, “Intermezzo: A Novel,” which instantly captivated me. It’s a profoundly moving exploration of grief, love, and the intricacies of family life, with love at its heart. Reflecting on my journey through grief, I remember how Ms. Rooney‘s earlier work, “Beautiful World, Where Are You,” resonated with me during my second year of processing loss.

It beautifully highlighted love’s enduring nature and reminded me that, even in the depths of sorrow, love’s essence never truly fades. Intermezzo focuses on the fact that, aside from being brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.

Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.

Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. In 2019, he was honored with the Dos Passos Prize, received a Lannan Award in 2021, and was awarded the Bill Whitehead Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.

The Way of Integrity

Today, I started reading Martha Beck‘s “The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self,” a book recommended by my friend Mark. I always appreciate receiving book recommendations from friends and readers of my blog. In her self-help book, Ms. Beck asserts, “Integrity is the cure for psychological suffering. Period.” This book will be invaluable during my early period of grief. I purchased the eBook from Bookshop and plan to do so.

Bestselling author, life coach, and sociologist Martha Beck explains why “integrity”—needed now more than ever in these tumultuous times—is the key to a meaningful and joyful life. As she writes,

This book, as you may have gleaned from the title, is all about integrity. But I don’t mean this in a moralizing sense. The word integrity has taken on a slightly prim, judgmental nuance in modern English, but the word comes from the Latin integer, meaning “intact.” To be in integrity is to be one thing, whole and undivided. When a plane is in integrity, all its millions of parts work together smoothly and cooperatively. If it loses integrity, it may stall, falter, or crash. There’s no judgment here. Just physics.

In The Way of Integrity, Beck presents a four-stage process that anyone can use to find integrity, a sense of purpose, emotional healing, and a life free of mental suffering. With lyrical intensity, Marie NDiaye masterfully evokes the relentless denial of dignity, to say nothing of happiness, in these lives caught between Africa and Europe. I highly recommend this novel.
